Insang Kwak
I am Insang Kwak, the founder and director of XYZ Design Studio. My journey as a designer and media artist was deeply shaped in France, where I explored the essence of visual language and aesthetics, earning both my bachelor's and master's degrees at École Supérieure d’Art et Design Le Havre-Rouen. At XYZ, I lead practical projects that bridge the gap between academic theory and industry practice, consistently presenting works that integrate AI, data-driven design, and interactive installations on the global stage.
Building on this creative foundation, I serve as a professor in the Department of Design Convergence at Hongik University’s College of Fine Arts. In my academic role, I focus on convergent creative education, encompassing communication design, interaction design, and digital media art. I am dedicated to fostering a new generation of designers who can navigate the complex intersections of art, technology, and human experience.
To further push the frontiers of design, I lead the ST-D Lab (Spatiotemporal Design Lab). While my studio, XYZ, focuses on the structural dimensions of space, ST-D Lab expands this exploration into the fourth dimension: Time. At ST-D, we don't just study technology; we utilize XR (Extended Reality) and Digital Twins as essential mediums to design the 'Spatiotemporal Fabric' of our environment. Our research seeks to redefine human perception and interaction by creating a seamless continuum between the physical and digital worlds. Through these interconnected roles—as a studio director, educator, and researcher—I strive to inspire innovation and suggest new directions in the ever-evolving landscape of contemporary design.
